Pre-Workout Drinks

I stopped by the local GNC this week and I couldn’t believe the amount of pre-workout drinks available to consumers. I constantly see guys at the gym slugging this stuff from their water bottles and I wondered what is actually in these concoctions. The promise of drinks like NO-Xplode, Jacked 3D and Hemo Rage Block is that they give you needed energy and stamina to work out harder. Products like this are popular among bodybuilders, and other younger exercise junkies, but are they beneficial, and more importantly healthy?

If you check out the labels on any of these containers the first thing you notice is they are loaded with tons of caffeine. If you really wanted a boost you could save your money and just drink a cup of coffee before you hit the gym. I’m not endorsing the idea of pounding coffee before you hit the plates but the reality is you would probably get the same result. Another common thread throughout these products is the dreaded artificial flavors and sweeteners. If you see Aspartame or Sucralose(Splenda) listed among the ingredients stop reading and put it back. These toxins have been linked to not only common headaches and allergies but also to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s Chorea. Stay away! If companies care so little about your health that they add this to their products I wouldn't put too much stock in the quality of their Creatine, L-Arginine, etc.

The take away here is that our bodies need the highest quality nutrients to perform optimally. You have already gotten over the hard part of actually working out now don’t ruin it by poisoning yourself with this expensive junk.

Eat a healthy diet, drink water and get plenty of sleep. This is a recipe for success!
